FAQS

There can be multiple causes of anemia. The exact cause has to be found before starting the treatment. Certain blood tests are required to reach at conclusion before starting treatment. Iron deficiency anemia is the most common cause of anemia but other anemias need to be evaluated like megaloblastic anemia, refractory anemia and myelodysplastic syndromes.

ITP is a disease where own platelets are destroyed by the body’s immune system resulting in bleeding manifestations. Treatment involves steroids/IVIG/TPO agonists.

Blood cancer or leukemia is the cancer of blood cells most commonly the white blood cells. The two most common blood cells which result in leukemia are neutrophils causing cute myeloid leukemia and lymphocytes cay using acute lymphoblastic leukemia. These aggressive cancers need urgent diagnosis followed by induction chemotherapy. Further treatment includes either continuation of chemotherapy or bone marrow transplantation depending upon the type of or risk of leukemia.

Chemotherapy is a type of cancer medicine used for the treatment of blood cancers. Its side effects include nausea, vomiting, oral ulcers, hair loss, infections, renal impairment or rarely involvement of any organ system.

BMT also called SCT is used as a definite treatment for many hematlogical diseases. The principle of BMT is the replacement of damaged or cancerous bone marrow of the patient with the healthy marrow of the donor. There is usually no harm or risk to the donor. Nowadays peripheral blood stem cells of donor can be taken just as platalet (SDP) donation. The recipient is given donate the STEM cells after completing induction chemotherapy. BMT/SCT is of two types – autologous BMT where donor is not needed like transplant for myeloma and lymphoma and allogeneic BMT where the donor is required like for acute leukemia, aplastic anemia and thalassemia. The BMT usually takes 4 weeks and the patient is kept in isolation for 4 weeks.

The usual complications in the initial part of transplant are risks of infections, bleeding and acute graft versus host disease (GVHD). The later complications include risk of rejection, late onset infections, chronic GVHD and relapse.
