Bone Marrow Aspiration & Biopsy Test
This is one of the most commonly performed procedure by a hematologist. Our bone marrow which is the softer inner part of the bones produces all our blood cells (like red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets), so if there is any defect in their production or maturation then that can be easily detected by doing the bone marrow test. This test is performed for the diagnosis of aplastic anemia, leukemia, myeloma, lymphoma, myelodysplastic syndrome, and myelofibrosis. The procedure is done under local anesthesia from posterior superior iliac crest. The procedure is very safe, and the patient can be sent home after the procedure. The sample of biopsy thus obtained is sent to the laboratory for examination under microscope for diagnosis of the disease. Bone marrow aspirate sample can also be sent for immunophenotyping, cytogenetic studies and various molecular tests.
